Steve's Music in Award Winning Film

Oct, 8 2006

Steve Biegner's song "A Window, a Vault, a Pillar of Salt" has been featured in the now award winning film "Anchor Eddy's." "Anchor Eddy's" picked up the award for Best New Comedy at the 2006 Worcester Underground Film Festival. The song is first performed by a movie band (which Steve was super bummed not to be a part of) and then later, his version rolled over into the opening credits.

The song, written specifically for the movie, is used by the movie band to win a gig to save Anchor Eddy's, a local bar that a slimey coffee corporation is trying to buy up. Dave Dellacese, the director, has known Steve for years and has used several of his other songs in previous movies. This was the first to have won an award.

Dave called Steve right before filming and originally needed two songs. One song was supposed to be used for a montage of two of the characters on a date. Dave called a few weeks later and said he just needed one song that a band called "The Duneboogies" would play twice throughout the movie - once at an audition, next at the beach party at the end of the movie.

Steve had just finished reading "The Dead" at the end of James Joyce's "Dubliners" and really wanted to write a song about that. The mood of the story wasn't quite right for a beach party, so Steve gave the idea a "Hollywood treatment" and gave it a happy ending. On top of the lyrics he created a cozy musical bed for the words to sit on, ending with a Beach Boys/Brian Wilson-esque ending with high, winding, counterpuntal harmonies. Dave loved it, and the two hugged - a lot. As for whether or not the beach party or the Duneboogies helped save Anchor Eddy's, you're going to have to watch the movie to find out.
